Military Officers Association of America
Solution: content management, custom applications
Vertical: associations, non-profit

The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) is the nation's largest and most influential association of military officers. It provides its members expert advice and guidance. MOAA’s web site, a source of information for its 370,000 members, is a key communication method for membership recruitment and retention. Fig Leaf was engaged to extend the implementation of Site Refresh, the organization’s chosen content management system (CMS) application.

Fig Leaf’s implementation incorporated MOAA’s existing IT Infrastructure, thus saving the association time and money.  MOAA had legacy applications that were written in three different ways; 1) ASP, Visual Basic (VB) with SQL, 2) ASP, VB with Oracle, and 3) ColdFusion 4.5 with Oracle. MOAA’s web site was complex with over six third-party provided content and functionality and a membership management database that was hosted by an outside vendor.

Despite the complexity of the legacy systems and architecture, Fig Leaf was able to quickly decipher the legacy application code and efficiently port the legacy system to the new web site and server.  Fig Leaf enhanced functionality by creating custom ASP VB Script and integrated it into Site Refresh, the CMS Solution. Fig Leaf integrated MOAA’s forms with the CMS which helped to preserve the MOAA’s existing content and structure.  Some of the forms and applications created and integrated by Fig Leaf include:

    • Membership Sign-up
    • Membership Renewal
    • Member Preferences and Profile
    • Polls and Surveys
    • Login & Page Security
    • User-Generated Web pages
    • Portal pages to applications existing in other domains
    • Student Scholarship applications
    • Lists and searching

Fig Leaf helped MOAA achieve their business goals. The project was on-time and under budget. MOAA’s web site is now more intuitive for both its existing members and new users. The membership renewal and application process is easier-to-use and optimized with focused content for its target audience. Fig Leaf was able to deliver ahead of schedule on tasks and was very responsive to MOAA’s needs throughout the entire process.

“We’re very pleased with our experience with Fig Leaf …They were very professional and candid…They gave us realistic expectations throughout the process.  They also provided great communication...They’re also clearly well-connected in the industry.  We were confident in their recommendations... They have become advisors to us."

~ Lauri Bearce, Deputy Director and Managing Editor, MOAA

As a result of its overall positive experience with Fig Leaf, MOAA has hired Fig Leaf to provide ongoing technical support for the new web site and database.
